2011-2016: MPhys Physics, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, UK
Dean is a PhD student in Graeme Whyte's research group. Before starting his PhD Dean completed his undergraduate masters degree in Physics at Heriot-Watt University. He has experience in optical trapping as well as microfluidics. His final year dissertation involved a project where a number of individual cells were encapsulated within droplets and left to form microtumours. These tumours (~5-20 cells in size) could then be removed from the droplets and used in further experiments. This experience encouraged Dean to continue in this the field of microfluidics.
Outside university Dean enjoys watching and playing many different sports including badminton, football, basketball, squash, etc. He loves traveling and has backpacked around Europe the past two years visiting over 20 cities. He enjoys a night out and spends most nights with friends as he gets bored being in by himself.
He is looking forward to another 3 years at HWU as a PhD student and as part of POBBBS.
